How we choose sources
AfricaFrontPage links to 183 news outlets through 271 news feeds, covering 45 African countries plus pan-African news. 52 of the outlets publish in French and 5 in Portuguese. This page explains who makes the list, how we check it, and what we do when a source gets it wrong.
What we look for
- Established news organisations. National newspapers, radio and TV broadcasters, news agencies and established online newsrooms, with their own editorial staff and a track record of original reporting.
- Independent and state media, side by side. The list includes state-owned and public outlets (for example GBC, Ghanaian Times, SABC News, KBC, ENA, ANGOP, Jornal de Angola, APS, Daily News Botswana, Zambia Daily Mail, New Era, Cameroon Tribune, Fraternité Matin, The Herald, Ahram Online) alongside independent ones, so you can compare the official account with independent reporting. Every headline names its outlet so you can judge for yourself.
- Local first, plus the big pan-African desks. Each country page is built from that country's own outlets. Pan-African and international desks (BBC Africa, Africanews, AllAfrica, The Africa Report, Le Monde Afrique, RFI Afrique, France 24, CNN) feed the Africa-wide pages; for world-wide outlets we keep only their stories about Africa.
- Breadth. For each country we aim for several outlets with different owners, so no single publisher decides what you see.
What we aim to leave out
- Anonymous sites with no named owner, editor or contact details.
- Clickbait and content farms, and sites that mainly copy or rewrite other outlets' work.
- Sites known for publishing fabricated or doctored stories.
- Press-release wires, party or campaign sites, and paid placements posing as news.
How we check sources
- Every feed on the list was tested in October 2026 and is checked on every update (every 10 minutes); a feed that stops working is fixed or dropped.
- Where an outlet's own feed is blocked or gone, we read its latest stories through Google News instead (46 outlets today). The link still goes to the outlet's own article.
- Opinion, sponsored and partner content is never picked automatically as a lead story, and duplicate copies of one story are merged.
Fabricated stories
If you see a headline you believe is false, email the link to [email protected]with a line on why. We review it, and any headline or outlet can be removed.
